Cardi B And Bernie Sanders FaceTimed Before His First Dem Debate

Just hours before his first Democratic debate as a 2020 contender, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spent about 10 minutes on the phone with an unlikely ally, talking about an unlikely topic: motherhood, with rapper megastar Cardi B.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1244670

Is TPM running exclusives on every popstar/rapper/whatever who either endorses, doesn’t endorse, or otherwise can be mentioned in the same sentence as a politician (e.g. A$AP)?

A press leak by the Sanders campaign to make him seem less old and out of step? Call me when he gets a call from someone I’ve heard of…

The 26-year-old rapper is a supremely powerful ally for the senator, according to his aides, especially given her status on social media.

Hard at work winning the Twitter Primary.

No need to denigrate: “pornstars, rappers, whatever”… Rappers are not just celebrities! They are in the word business and are de facto pundits and thought leaders. This story is at least curious.

Because it’s insulting AF to Black people who berniacs think they can the Black vote for them with the “endorsement” of a well known rapper. It’s on the same level as the regime being insulted that A$AP Rocky didn’t thank them (publicly or behind the scenes) for their assistance for - uh, doing something for the rapper thereby denying them of the Black vote. There are some performers who are very knowledgeable about politics. I’ve never had the sense that CardiB was one of them.

Something to that effect.

ETA: For those people who think that I’m dunking on CardiB, let me put it this way: she doesn’t have the artistic or social acumen of Childish Gambino.

It was “popstars”, but I can appreciate the slip that you read into it.

The critique is not that, per se, it’s all of the other, much more significant political stories that get skipped and never get mentioned by TPM.

If they’ve got the time to check up on some rapper’s chat history, surely they can hit some of the major issues out there that are of interest to the subscriber base.

If your campaign is hanging its hat on CardiB, you’ve got bigger problems than endorsements.

Sure, there are better sites for news and analysis, but remember, you come here for the posters, not TPM.

It’s a no-effort rip of a Politico piece. Josh is just stirring the pot.

I understand that the Dem party needs to do better in courting the black vote – especially with younger voters. I do wonder if Dem candidates are picking the right “role models” for that effort. While I agree with Ms. B. on things like justice reform, she has also shown herself to be a bit of a homophobe. It leaves one to wonder if Dem presidential candidates are just expecting to get the LGBT vote (because of the current administration’s stance and policies against same) in an effort to get the African American vote – and, in doing so, they are courting people who are homophobic. After all, for a long time, the Dems just expected the African American vote while not really doing anything to earn it. It seems that the LGBT community is going to be left out in this campaign.
