He has an R after his name. Please see your optometrist. Objects in GOP are more corrupt than they appear.
Yes to this .
Mitch has already stated his goal with the trial is to keep the Senate in GOP hands come 2021. Itās not a trial. Itās a campaign ad.
I suspect that Burr, along with quite a few other senate Repubs, is strongly considering voting to either convict or abstain (as someone else pointed out to me here recently the necessary supermajority to convict is 2/3 of those present and voting, so if say 10 Repubs abstain, you only need 60 and not 67 to convict). Partly because he probably canāt stand the guy and realizes what a horrible person and president he is, partly because heās likely been personally insulted by him, but mostly because heās hurting the GOP and one way or another theyāve got to get rid of him.
The challenge for such Repubs is how to do so without alienating their base. There are ways, but they require making Trump look so bad that they can plausible claim to not have a choice. I mean, really, really bad, that even some of the base wonāt abide, even worse than whatās come out so far. They have to set him up for a fall, without it seeming like they did. For that, they need allies, or proxies, doing their dirty work for themā¦Enter Dems, stage left. Dems ex machina to the rescue!
He should be careful what he wishes for, or how he intends to bring it about. A prolonged trial will likely hurt Repubs more than it helps. The longer it is the more the public hears about Trumpās crimes.
I prefer McTurdle, for the double-whammy. Or, Moscow Mischa.
One chilling thought. Someone mentioned somewhere recently that while an impeached president has never run for reelection, if impeached AND removed he could still run again in 2020, and in theory win. Doubtful, but lawful and possible. Heād have to be convicted in a criminal trial to not be able to run.
The Senate would have to have a separate vote for that, but they can apply that sanction alongside conviction and removal.
Iām just waiting for his lawyers to say that, due to the russkies flipping the election for him, he never was a legitimate president, and only lawfully elected presidents can be impeachedā¦
Iām not so sure. Sounds to me like they may be planning to draw this out to keep the Democratic senators who also happen to be presidential candidates from being able to hit the campaign trail during the height of primary season.
Except for when he was briefing the White House on the testimony his own committee was gathering when this shitstorm started and without anyone else knowing it at the time.
Not reasonable perseā, he does tend to align with Party after publishing things. He is a worker bee, and we need worker bees.
But as he is my Senator, allow me to warn you against giving him too much credit of how and what he will vote for.
How in Gods name can an Impeachment trial take 6 or 8 week? More like 6 to 8 daysā¦tops. Itās so simple. Are bribery and extortion impeachable offenses? The facts are indisputable. Unless the Democrats include other instances of Trump misconduct/crimes (of which there are many) and incorporate those crimes in additional articles of impeachment, the Senate trial will be much shorter than that predicted by Burr.
Bill Clintonās Senate trial in 1999 took from early January to the middle of February.
It could be Moscow Mitch is all for it. Let his Senators feel safe and then let them vote. It could go either way, but Mitch and his Republican brethren are facing hell in the 2020 election. Trump is an anvil around their necks.
Yep the Clinton trial lasted weeks. That was one long blow job.
Agreed.
If Trump wonāt leave willingly he can be dragged kicking and screaming down the WH steps and thrown on the lawn.
I agree, the longer the trial goes the more Americans will tune out. I donāt see a long trial helping them at all.
I take Article I, section 3, clause 7 to mean that a person once impeached and convicted, is ineligible to hold any federal office whether elected or appointed. OTOH there is Judge Alcee Hastings*, who was impeached, convicted, and removed from the federal bench, and a few years later ran successfully for congress (Florida, natch).
7: Judgment in Cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.
*Alcee Hastings is a bit of a special case in that his senate trial was bungled: he was tried before a senate committee rather than the full senate. A federal judge later ruled that the conviction was invalid due to Hastingsā right to a trial before the full senate, but the SC determined in Nixon v. US that federal courts have no jurisdiction over senate impeachment matters, and that ruling was vacated. So, I donāt know. Art 1 sec 3 clause 7 says someone removed via impeachment is ineligible, yet Hastings served in congress.
Or, your honor my client is too stupid to do any of this, of his own admission. See, heās playing with a ball of yarn right now and eating his own buggers!
Oh, wait, never mind, thatās Ericā¦
If I were McConnell, I would have several tricks planned to subvert the process.
I would also be sure to let someone naive like Burr stand up in public and manufacture a sincere smokescreen for me.
And then, when the time comes to conjure a train wreck to save my power, I would find a way to leave someone elseās fingerprints on it.
If Trump doesnāt leave following conviction by the Senate, or if he doesnāt leave after losing the Electoral College, he will be removed from office by Federal Marshals the moment the new President is sworn into office. Frankly, I also believe that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has had enough of this, and heād probably have a helpful team nearby to assist in the evacuation.
We would still need to fumigate the property.
