I’m not sure what equivocating over NAACP vs BLM gets us. The point is the groups that are most positioned to gain from VR legislation are now spitting in the face of the man dedicated to getting it for them. That’s bratty and unproductive

If the vote to change the filibuster fails, Schumer needs to step down as majority leader. It’d be a colossal embarrassment to have a vote like that fail.

Minority veto power is always problematic. Typically, it exists in countries with sizable ethnic minorities. Belgium uses an “alarm bell” procedure that can be triggered by 3/4 of an ethnic or linguistic minority, that goes immediately to an arbitration phase. So only a supermajority of the minority wields the veto, and some resolution must be achieved to move forward. In contrast, the US treats minority veto powers as sacred, with the result that many people are under-represented by their “representative government”. Manchin is showing his middle finger to the majority of Americans, making it clear that incumbent minorities call the shots. Minority protections are not the same thing as minority rule.

I got mildly crucified a few months ago for expressing my frustration, admittedly in a sloppy way, that Manchin and Sinema are harming the Democrats with their intransigent and arrogant attitudes and mendacious negotiations on BBB.
So let me be clear on saying that, yes, I understand we need their votes - which they have mostly provided - for judges and other federal nominees. But if Democrats lose the midterms, which I increasingly fear they will (and I didn’t start out feeling that way, despite all the early predictions), I will blame those two for scuttling the opportunity for Democrats to show they could lead and bring meaningful, substantive progress for the nation.
At some point Democrats have to bring this and the BBB bills to a vote, and let all the members put their votes on record, even if it sinks the legislation for this session. The slow swinging in the wind of these bills is painful and makes Democrats appear even weaker in the eyes of voters.
Sinema is a problem child all by herself, but I focus most of my current ire on Manchin. If requiring Manchin to take a vote on the Senate floor rather than on the friendly environs of Fox “News” causes him to bolt, so be it. It won’t make a bit of difference come November anyhow. I don’t know that he will, but it can no longer be a reason for not bringing legislation to a vote. Given his tantrum at being (accurately) called out as the one standing in the way in December, he’s clearly floundering and unpredictable and angry, all of which is a drag on the entire party.
I want to be proven wrong. Hell, I wanted to be proven wrong last September. But I don’t see anything that changes my instincts. Every time I allow myself some hope, Manchin pops up - gratuitously it seems - with another unnecessary public declaration, each time twisting the knife on Democratic objectives a bit deeper. No objective observer could possibly arrive at the conclusion that he wants to reach a solution.

I understand the frustration, but there isn’t a lot that the elected Democrats can do. Biden cannot create voting rights from the oval office, if he tried this supreme court would certainly stop him. And quickly. In the Senate, thanks to Georgia (my home) the Democrats control the Senate but without a majority, just the fact of the vice president. So with two recalcitrant Democratic senators, there’s not much that can be done there. I will say this, if Black voters think their issues are not getting attention from Democrats, just stay home next election and see how well the Republicans treat you. The solution is simply to elect more Democrats. And understand, I’m not a Democrat or Republican or an independent. I’m a rich lefty voter and I find it all as frustrating as everybody else, but I’m clear eyed about it. Though in perfect, the only hope is electing more Democrats. It’s tough. In my opinion we should support politicians who support our agenda, basically civil rights broadly defined (the right to vote, the right to a quality education, the right to a living wage, the right to not be shot by police, the right to a clean environment, etc.), however frustratingly ineffective, rather than tear those people down because they can’t convince the right (Including Manchin, Sinema is her own weird animal) to act like and for Americans.

The Senate is bad, but it’s hardly unrepresentative of the country as a whole. 50/50 plus Kamala as the tiebreaker is pretty close to the 2020 nationwide presidential result of Biden +4.

I’m pretty sure manchin knows exactly that there is a zero chance of bipartisanship on this or any other issue. He’s just cynically using it as an excuse to stand in solidarity with his ideological soulmates on the right.

Honestly, because we all know how Republicans feel about this and why. The party passing these voter suppression efforts is the Republican Party. They’re the ones who want to limit voting, so it’s kind of pointless to ask why they won’t participate in stopping a thing they overwhelmingly support.
They’re not spitting in his face. Some groups, of which there are literally hundreds, aren’t going to his speech because they feel Biden and Dems haven’t taken seriously what is an existential crisis for Black voters, particularly those in GA. They feel angry and frustrated by what is happening and they don’t feel the party has been responsive enough. Honestly, it’s true. I don’t blame Biden for that. I blame Manchin and Sinema, but I get the overall frustration that this sort of push wasn’t made sooner. A lot of people, not just these groups, feel all is lost because maps have already been drawn and they’re worried that there won’t be enough time for challenges to these laws. They’re wrong about that, but I get the frustration and feeling taken for granted. And they’re not wrong for feeling like the party should’ve pushed for this sooner when Biden was more popular. Had everyone known in January what Manchin and Sinema would do I have no doubt at all the party would have done something back then. The best laid plans…

I’m just so sick of the coddling of Manchin and Sinema and how our entire democracy now relies on getting those two assholes to fall in line when they never negotiate in good faith. We never try whipping them to fall in line by taking away their Committee assignments.
Schumer made a huge splash about setting up a vote to change the filibuster. But if that vote fails, it’ll be seen as a huge embarrassment like when Mitch failed to overturn the ACA because John McCain was one of the few Republicans that had a shred of decency left. You can’t promise a vote unless you know the vote is going to pass. If the vote doesn’t pass, it makes you look weak and ineffective.
