Biden Apologizes For Comment About Segregationists

He’s known not to listen when his advisers give him, you know, advice. They famously told him years ago not to keep saying he marched in the civil rights era when that never actually happened, and he kept saying it.

This bugs me too. He’s been absent more than present at most of the most important liberal moments that have occurred.

If he’s gone to the border I have not heard about it and everyone else pretty much has.

It is a nice pun, but I see no outcome where Biden drops out. He has the resources, especially the money, to go all the way. Dropping out means accepting a final failure to achieve his dream. I don’t see him giving that up easily. The one chance for that might be if he does so poorly in the initial voting that the outcome becomes personally embarrassing, at which point he might find some external reason for backing out. (It might also be possible if his polling really goes south over the next several months.) Offhand, I think that an unlikely outcome.

This is slightly off topic, but I haven’t seen any particular response to this news item, which indicates that back in the time when Biden was anti-busing, Warren was in favor.
Just from my personal perspective I’m also glad to see she was talking about unequal funding of school districts then.

I am not normally a fan of profanity, but I can hardly disagree with it in this instance (even though I would not repeat the chant myself . . . well, at least not out loud).

If he apologizes people complain, if Biden does not apologize they complain. He can not win. Back then the chairmen of the Appropriations and Armed Services and Judiciary Committee were all segregationists. To get a bill to the floor Senators had to work with them. Harris and Booker have to deal with McConnell, but they did not have to deal with those guys. Biden did.

I’m soft on this point currently. A 60/40(ish) split with the big number opposed doesn’t read to me that the public mood is leaning strongly toward impeachment. Among Democrats sure, but we wanted him out before he was in.

I do think that Warren skated on this nicely, however. To make it a moral issue and a moral imperative, which she did, is a high ground stance. It doesn’t come off to me as particularly partisan, instead it simply seems principled, and I have a feeling she’ll come across as less partisan than others in the race on this because…reasons? Can’t really point to objective reasons because it’s more my own visceral reaction to Warren than anything else. There’s a genuineness about her that speaks to me, but I’m open to the possibility that not everyone responds to her that way. So I can’t and won’t say, Warren is genuine. I can only say she comes across that way to me.

This sort of thing was always going to be a problem for him. Some of us noted it as such back when he was still just thinking of running.

Well don’t look now but this IS the Democratic primary.

The problem is not that Biden dealt with ‘those guys’ then, it’s that he boasted about it now. And in doing so, gave Harris the perfect opening she needed to break “the Obama Bond”.

He blew it and showed us that she has prospects as someone capable of taking on entrenched Male Privilege. Unless somebody else can demonstrate a similar ability to take down Donnie, she’s my choice.

Me too. She seems to live and breathe the idea that the powerful should not be allowed to take advantage of those less so.

Oh I was thinking ahead to the general. That’s my tendency. But I do tend to agree with you and @khyber900 that her flat out declaration for impeachment is helping her numbers with Democrats. Not, however, catapulting her into the lead – whihc is also interesting.

And it doesn’t seem false, even though she has quite a lot of money. She has a long history of taking the same positions, and actions that show she means it. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was a great idea, and very successful until Trump got his hands on it.

Very consistent over her career, yes. Walking the walk. She’s what Trump pretended to be, and she knows it.

hahaha No she isn’t in the lead so you’re right it hasn’t catapulted her ahead of the rest so that’s a fair criticism of my position for sure.

I think the purpose of the apology is not to appease those he apologized to, but rather to give cover to his supporters in the black community. His political opponents were always going to criticize his apology whether it came after two weeks or immediately after the gaffe. They will criticize him as long as he is the front runner. But apologizing makes it much easier for people to endorse him.

By the way, I’ve been reading TPM and its forums since 2000. Obviously a fan of Josh but, if you believe the wishful thinking of the forum’s uber-progressives, then you must also believe, for example, that Alison Lundergan Grimes is a senator from Kentucky.

But we are still months away from the first votes.

and it didn’t hurt that she was “first out of the box” among the major candidates on the impeachment issue. Everyone else was just following Pelosi’s “slow walk” policy. Warren called BS on it, and since then most candidates have followed.
