Some of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) biggest congressional supporters were eager to move on Wednesday, as the Sanders campaign picked itself up from a bruising Super Tuesday.
Ocasio-Cortez declined to say if Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) should drop out after her disappointing night, saying that in lieu of an “egregious scandal,” it’s not her place to tell a candidate when to suspend her campaign.
“Sometimes there’s a notion that something is safer just because we know the devil that is, but you know, that’s still the devil,” she said before quickly clarifying that she was not, in fact, likening Biden to the dark prince.
“Bernie won the biggest prize of the night, so now we need to focus on moving forward,” she told TPM. Despite Sanders’ first-place finish in the state Tuesday, both Biden and Sanders netted substantial delegates (counting is still underway).
That too, but she is also well-funded by old-school Boston groups with deep pockets. She was the safer choice to unseat Capuano before an unknown threat showed up.
And yet…Bernie’s camp is demanding Warren drop out in order to save him…
So, to recap:
Individual Dems supporting Biden and zero evidence of any untoward manipulation of any elections processes = Dems “rigging” and “establishment interfering” in the election to screw Bernie
Bernie’s campaign pressuring Warren to drop out to help Bernie = nothing wrong with that
Conceding defeat is painful and difficult, and I don’t really expect Sanders’ most visible surrogates to knife their endorsee in the back the next day. That said, for those who might be inclined to see the “Squad” as more media bark than congressional bite, this does little to convince them otherwise.
