When it comes to getting millions of mail ballots out to voters during the current pandemic, election officials are finding themselves between a rock and a hard place.
States with more experience, such as Colorado for instance, have laws requiring that ballots sent out sent within a certain period before the election be mailed first class, and also have a messaging program that instructs voters to use drop boxes or other non-mail modes of ballot return if the election day is too close to rely on the postal service.
This is the election where everyone who can afford to take the risk to cast a ballot in person needs to do so. Whether it’s a drop box, early voting, or day of.
Our best shot at stopping all of the election shenanigans is to do it that way, we can work on mail-in when things are back to normal.
My Aussie-based relatives are examining the potential to Fedex or other courier to my house, with me dropping them off at the polling station. There’s definitely some issues getting envelopes out of Australia at the moment, but far greater fear of the USPS once the ballots are in their hands. From what we’ve found online, they just need to sign the waiver for somebody else to deliver, but however we do it, there’s about half a dozen in that batch alone, and this time Every. Single. Vote. Counts…
Sorry…this is all bullshit. It’s not a coincidence that this is happening.
For an election of this magnitude USPS should be on everyone’s mind, every day…and I will tell you why:
If and when Trump is made aware that his Toady at the Post Office can’t deliver the mail-in vote to him, Trump will let everyone in America know. Therefore we must work to set this right at all costs. It’s not an “across the aisle” problem, it is far greater than that.
Do Trump and Trump Party ever think that restricting votes in a pandemic could reduce the number of Trump supporters who cast votes? Many Trump supporters are elderly and high risk. Just a thought.
I use the ballot drop box within walking distance of my house. It is also located right next to the public library BTW, Kim Wyman -WA Secretary of State- is a Republican. It is significant that she is speaking out.
Voting is fundamental to our democracy, and everyone should be pulling out all the stops to make voting easy and safe in the current situation. The fact that Trump and his lackey are causing issues at USPS and implying that ballots may be interfered with is really standing out. If the Democrats really do pull this off, they are going to have a very easy case to make about voting rights, especially if the Republicans do even more to interfere. The first time a ballot box is attacked, or they station “observers” outside polling places to threaten voters, will just add to the weight against them.
It really does feel like the last, desperate grab for power by the racists running the Republican party…we need to make sure that they miss.
And drop boxes are good for urban and suburban populations, which mean rural voters can then vote by mail, or a drop box(es) near their post office or city hall.
I think many of us in 100% VBM states like WA will be using the available drop boxes as well, the way things are going.
I’ve always just mailed my ballot back, because we get them 2 weeks before the election so there’s plenty of time, and you can check online to make sure it arrived. This year I’m not taking any chances. It goes into the drop box at the local courthouse.
