Attorney General William Barr said Wednesday that police shootings of Black Americans often aren’t racially motivated and are much less common than portrayed by recent nationwide protests that have called for an end to police violence.
Barr appeared to acknowledge on Wednesday that there are “some situations” where statistics “would suggest” that Black people are treated differently, but he quickly added the caveat that he doesn’t think the distinction is “necessarily racism.”
WTAF Treating people differently on the basis of their skin color is the fucking definition of racism. How does Jabba The Barr define racism?
“Didn’t Jesse Jackson say that when he looks behind him and he sees a group of young Black males walking behind him, he’s more scared than when he sees a group of White youths walking behind him,” Barr added. “Does that make him a racist?”
Does Barr mean that Black people can’t be racist? Does that include Black cops who are harsher on Black men to maintain their creds with their white brothers-in-blue?
The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. said later Wednesday that Barr had taken his comments out of context.
Jackson told CNN that back in the 1990s his family lived in a “drug-infested neighborhood,” where “a family member’s son was killed right in front of my house, killed right in front of my wife, a drug thing.”
Jackson said that he had been talking about “the young man” who killed his relative. “If he comes behind me, I would be afraid,” Jackson said.
This whole interview was an expression of straight-up GOP lunacy. They asked about Trump’s suggestion that people in NC vote twice and he replied that he didn’t know what the laws were in each state. Of course the premise there is that maybe in some states you can vote twice. That is not a valid premise. Presumably he knows that. But if Trump says it, you cannot contradict it.
The Fountains were released without bond and ordered to surrender their firearms until the case is resolved.
“If we’re the ones shooting at them, we would still be in jail right now, probably with no bond, probably with intent to kill,” Clemons said. “But they got to walk free.”
" Treating people differently on the basis of their skin color is the fucking definition of racism . How does Jabba The Barr define racism ?"
And what an absolutely epic failure by Wolf Blitzer for not pointing that out. Fundamental journalism.
I will never forgive Blitzer salivating with joy when announcing that CNN would host and he would moderate the Tea Party debates in 2012.
He’s the perfect image of some lesser demon— someone who would have a name like Snotfartdingleberry (whatever that is in Latin or Aramaic) . He would be known for his horrid odor, and would usually be crunching the bones of some unsaved infant in his rotting teeth.
OT but worth noting. Love him or hate him…this is good news, if he follows through with it (nudge, nudge anti-trump campaign). From the NYT:
Mike Bloomberg donates $100 million to Black medical students
The former New York City mayor today plans to announce a large donation to four historically Black medical schools, in an effort to improve the health and wealth of Black communities, particularly during the pandemic.
The immediate goal is to ease the financial burden on about 800 medical students, who will each receive grants of up to $100,000. The donation to four institutions — Charles R. Drew University of Science and Medicine, in Los Angeles; Howard University College of Medicine, in Washington; Meharry Medical College, in Nashville; and Morehouse School of Medicine, in Atlanta — is one of the biggest by a single donor to historically Black schools.
Mr. Bloomberg’s gift is the first major donation from the [Greenwood Initiative], a racial justice program he started in the waning days of his presidential campaign.
Its broader aim is to increase the number of Black doctors in the U.S. The data-driven Mr. Bloomberg and his team were convinced by statistics showing that Black doctors help provide better health outcomes for Black patients and are more likely to work in underserved communities. That became even more of a concern amid the pandemic’s [disproportionate impact] on Black people. “By increasing the number of Black doctors, we hope the gift will help to save more Black lives and reduce the health problems that limit economic opportunity in Black communities,” Mr. Bloomberg told DealBook.
“I don’t think there are two justice systems,” Barr said in a sometimes contentious interview on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
He is technically correct in his mind because there is only one justice system and it’s for white people. Other US citizens simply don’t have one and don’t deserve one at all…
Although these events may be “rare” compared to all police interactions, they are common enough to have destroyed the credibility of law enforcement, even with people who aren’t POC. If he cares nothing about men being murdered, he should care about the loss of the moral authority of law enforcement. Of course, Barr is part of an effort to destroy the moral authority of the entire Federal government, so this is just part and parcel of that project.
