People tend to dig in their heels if they think they are being prevented from voting but this scenario would be really volatile.

We need mail in ballots everywhere. Mail in works marvelously well here in Colorado. And there are several drop boxes (it’s a small county) if you don’t feel comfortable with the mail. I always use the drop box outside the county building and court house.
My older brother was a journalist and in the 1980’s, he decided to get a dual MBA in Communications and Business. He shared some of his course work: The Peter Principle, the coming internet and its effects on advertising revenue, computer delivery of content, and competition. These would be manageable challenges even though newspapers were always operating on narrow profit margins. News was an essential to society and democracy. Owning one was an asset to the owners.
The loss of monopoly enforcement and increasing consolidation of business in general, with financialization, the coming of techlords, the ruthless efficiency of Ayn Rand social economics, the emasculation of the Republican Party, dark money, hard right propaganda fueled by a social malaise of economic stagnation were a toxic mix.
Bezos did the right thing as long as it didn’t cost too much money, like a lot of people; some like Trump and Musk are evil and enjoy cruelty, especially when “efficiency” hurts others while making them richer. Squeezing the blood out of employees and institutions is good business until it is not.
I grew up in Springfield, Ohio in the 1970’s, during the end of Vietnam and beginning of the end of a union based wage distribution system. I had a glimpse of the future for newspapers and communications. Seeing the future, may not do you much good unless you exercise agency in the present.
