Back To Debt Brinksmanship? Some GOPer Sens Think It Just Might Be Time | Talking Points Memo

“The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, . . . shall not be questioned.” The 14th Amendment seems to mandate payment of the debt.

OK - so if you want to budge Manchin and Sinema off their ridiculous stand on the filibuster, go ahead and start this shit on the debt ceiling and let’s see who blinks when the country goes into default. A debt ceiling bill could include a lot of other stuff, like the Voting Rights Acts for two…I’m just sayin’ !!

It’s time for the Democrats to hit back - hard, like starting investigations on every GOP Senator in the Congress. They ALL have dirty little secrets they are hiding that could be both news and indictment worthy.

Pro tip to Republicans: it’s NEVER “time” to play fast and loose with The Full Faith and Credit of the United States. Corollary: if you want a balanced budget, then make up spending by increasing taxes as necessary.

I hear that some of them even enjoy it.

Yes please, I would love for this to be the issue that ends the racist filibuster.

Doesn’t raising the ceiling require only 50 + 1 votes? If so, non-issue and empty threat. And even if it requires 60, there are not 40 Repubs who would vote against raising it. Bluff called, not impressed, moving on.

If you want government to stop sending you payments, vote Republican.

Otherwise, a vote for a Democrat is a vote for solvency.

I am not sure, but if so, this could be a way for the GOP to force the Dems to use up their remaining Reconciliation vote…they have one left in this Congress. President of the Senate Harris needs to FIRE the Parliamentarian and install herself as the rule book keeper. Who can stop her ??

I think the goppers are dreaming when they think Joe is going to fold. He is too old and too experienced and too wise to their bs.

The only real difference between trump and hitler is that hitler served in the military and was a lot younger when he took power. Otherwise they’re pretty much the same.

Which is why the Dems need to pass that infrastructure bill now. Why give the GQP a free pass for not paying the bills congress already approved? That’s what’s so messed up about the debt ceiling debate. Congress has already approved the money for this and that. Not raising the debt ceiling is like dining and dashing.

If Republicans tried this on (and I don’t see why they wouldn’t) then the Dems should RAISE their debt ceiling number by a good measure, because it would make Republicans go just utterly batshit mad.

If the GOP had their way, the US would more closely resemble the DRC, including people toting automatic weapons in the street and bouts of hyperinflation. The Dems on the other hand seem to imagine the US is, or could be, Sweden. I suggest a compromise, Sweden’s arch rival Denmark. Biden could then get the infrastructure bill through paid for without inflation. Indeed, the Danes even learned to deal with negative interest rates and have been none the worse for it. Here is a comparison of European inflation rates a couple years ago.

This is just business as usual; Republicans add on the debt and expect Democrats to reduce it. I would like it if someone would force them to show us the math. Of course, the can’t. because then it would become clear who does all the spending.

Add it to the Reconciliation Bill.

Nah, Dems need to call this bluff, which is what it is, to get Dems to use up that vote. Not authorizing the debt ceiling raise or passing a budget would be economically and politically disastrous and there aren’t enough Repubs that crazy.

But, but, but… you’re not seeing the inherent unfairness of that position. In general government spending tends to benefit everyone, more-or-less equally, right? I mean, rich or poor, you’re likely to use the highways, airports, and enjoy the lack of hostile foreign armies invading. And wealthy folks don’t tend so much to get any extra enjoyment out of those things than poor folks. But the wealthy, in theory, pay more in taxes than the poor. Totes unfair. The only solutions is to cut spending. Because FREEDOM, or something.

Obviously, the solution for this is a higher rate of violent property crime in the US. That would remind the wealthy why they pay taxes.
