You need a refresher course in GOPnomics. Tax cuts increase revenues so they kept the deficit from being even larger. We have to cut back the wanton spending increases that the Democratic minority forced through the Senate.*
* Attributed to the GOP lack of a grade-school level understanding of the U.S. government (h/t U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly)
âYou know, I think itâs an absolute disgrace that the Republicans are using the debt ceiling, which deals with the financial security, as sort of a political issue,â Schumer said. âWe should get something done in the right way.â
Good luck finding a way forward with these extortionists waiting in the wings to fuck America in a new time and place. There no longer is a movement toward effective governance by the gloating freaks that spend their time harassing and provoking⌠accomplishing nothing and looking more intractably idiotic by the day.
Unless Manchin and Sinema agree with the GOP that we should blow up the full faith and credit of the US on bad faith debt arguments, this will likely get resolved without GOP input.
However, I live in hope that Biden will go with the showy option for the debt ceiling:
Course, the fact is, as itâs been since at least Reagan, that the reactionaries cause most of that debt.
For years, their tactic has been to run up the debt spending on their priorities when theyâre in power and then use it as a cudgel to inhibit Democratic spending when theyâre no longer predominant in the government.
The debt ceiling is a stupid thing anyway. It is Congress attempting to arbitrarily cap National Debt that results from spending and tax policies that Congress itself has already approved and thereby mandated!
It would be like a family arbitrarily saying we wonât service any debt in excess of $50,000 after taking out a mortgage for $300,000 and buying a new car for $25,000. What are they going to do, stop making payments?
And what are we as a nation going to do, default on our debt? If you want to see a world â not just us â in economic chaos, that is a sure-fire way to get there.
I rejoice in the stupidity of Republicans. Next time they try the âAmerica is in debt and canât spend any moreâ routine I wish everyone would laugh in their faces.
Iâd be happy if the EU stopped chopping down US trees and burning them in biomass generation, TBH. Yes the trees grow back but you get a 20-30 year period of net CO2 increase.
Hereâs a new idea: Biden just extends it via executive order (even if that is a dodgy thing to do legally). After all, Congress has approved the spending, so Biden just says that that implies that the ability to borrow is part of the authorization of the spending. So he issues the executive order, and the Treasury keeps issuing new debt as if the debt ceiling doesnât matter. Maybe itâll give a few Republicans coronaries.
I remember that. Thereâs literally no political cost to obstruction anymore. None. So, instead of handwringing and carrying on, Dems just need to go around them and raise the debt ceiling on their own.
It doesnât matter if they are in control of the government with all the branches. It only matters when theyâre not in control and thatâs when they invoke this nonsense.
Just once, I wish someone, ANYone, would stand up and say there is no such thing as a debt ceiling in the US. Because there isnât. And the fact that these nincompoops invoke this nonsense whenever they arenât in charge and ignore it whenever they are in charge just shows what a sham the whole thing is.
And yet no one, anywhere, any time, has stood up and said, âEnoughâ.
Yes! One more time for those in the back - raising the debt ceiling isnât about âliving within your meansâ itâs about paying the bills you already incurred.
