As Trump Struggles to Carry Out His Voter Suppression Goals, DeSantis Picks Up the Slack

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a sweeping new voter suppression bill into law on Wednesday that is meant to mirror the national documentary proof of citizenship legislation that, to right-wing activists’ great displeasure, is currently languishing in a Republican-controlled Congress due to the Senate’s filibuster rules. The Florida governor is one of a handful…

Deep thought for the day: nothing reveals The true motivation behind our oppression of immigrants more than the concern for undocumented immigrants voting. It is all about power.

Of course undocumented immigrants don’t vote, because most undocumented immigrants are living in fear of being exiled for who they are. The last thing they want to do is break the law in such a documented way. Obviously.

The other side is that, of course, undocumented people live here too. There is absolutely no reason for the concept of citizenship to even exist let alone determine who gets to have a say and how we govern our shared society.

I know it’s a pipe dream, but it’s my dream. America should welcome all.

Edit: those trees are dead. I need a tree person. Anyone know a good tree person in the inland Pacific Northwest?

So, if InSantis disenfranchises a bunch of voters, they will still be a red State. I don’t see much of an influence on the national midterms. They were always going to be Republican/MAGAt - that doesn’t change.

Florida voters can do something about that. It’s called sue the State. I’m guessing the average voter will be just fine with it.

I’m angry about what Florida is doing, but I’m not frightened. The attempts to limit the franchise will backfire.

I know I personally would crawl over broken glass to vote, I also know I really don’t want to have to do that.

No one should have to, especially not using the ridiculous logic these morons are using.

[Florida] will impose cumbersome new documentary proof of citizenship mandates and harsh voter ID rules on those trying to vote in the state.

How about the federal government giving up that fancy facial recognition stuff ICE is wasting?

This seems to be about politicians making up paperwork for the public to fill out, so “somebody” can poke his nose into none-of-his-business.

Typical Republican government – bigger and bulkier.

the Republican Party’s favorite myth — that non-citizens are somehow voting en masse in U.S. elections

Problem solved. I knew they were all in Florida.

more than 9 percent of Americans who are eligible to vote do not have access to the required documents, for a variety of reasons.

Perhaps they don’t want to. Has the administration considered branding babies?

perhaps someone knows the answer…if a person cannot vote, do they have to pay taxes levied by state or federal…would such action be 'paying taxes without representation??

Incredible self destructive stupidity. Why would Iran ever negotiate with the Trump regime?

I’m not so sure about that. If anything, people prefer, in the immortal words of Barbara Bush, not to have their beautiful minds bothered by much, so like the end of the infamous “real Seymour Skinner” episode of “The Simpsons,” they’ll be determined to never mention it ever again and forget about the whole thing.

And they did.

there are lots of charts floating around showing how the price of oil and oil futures spiked pretty dramatically during his speech.

And the DOW resumes it downward spin, like a B-52 lacking lift, heading for 45 again.

Lie faster, Republicans.

The relationship between taxation and citizenship is an interesting one. Let’s set aside the idea of taxation without representation, because arguably large portions of America are taxed and not given full representation: The city of Washington, The US Virgin Islands, Guam, to a large degree Puerto Rico, are all taxed without getting full representation. But, if you look at the relationship between taxation and citizenship, it is often the very means that are used to enforce this, in my opinion, objectionable concept.

For most of the world, overstaying your visa is a taxation issue. Tax law is the enforcement mechanism for immigration.

Few countries enforce immigration the way America does, with mass deportation. The reason for this is obvious, it’s a human rights violation, not to mention expensive and deeply traumatizing to society.

It should also be noted that America is one of those few countries, perhaps the only one, I don’t remember, where citizens have to pay taxes on foreign income.
