Mark my words, the next “great” wars will be fought over water.

And now, Frist:

Everyone talks about the weather and no one does anything about it.

It already has started; they believe that is one of the reasons that Russia attacked Ukraine is because Ukraine cut off the water supply to Crimea.

Then you have this in China and the problem is severe enough that the Chinese are force to take drastic measures such as rationed electricity to their major cities and tanked in water to towns and villages. Things will not be getting any better since the heat wave ill continue until mid-September. There is more and this Guardian Report will show you.

The biggest thing I’d like to add to the conversation is pricing: agriculture pays a tiny fraction of what residential customers pay. Has anyone addressed that disparity, or proposed changes? Also, many years ago I read “Cadillac Desert” which seemed among many other interesting things to say that the entire framework was unsustainable even absent global warming.

and why are foriegn countries permitted to buy up farm land and grow crops to feed their catttle in the foriegn country…let them use their oil…ISREAL has grown foods in their ‘desert’ for along time…yet the stupid people in the western USA stiil use aerial spraying to water their crops…how much water is lost to evaporation???also read Cadillac Desert…

These are the plans that China is working on to fix this problem and the consequences will be dire to the regions if they go through with them.

  1. They want to change the Brahmaputra River Basin. The Chinese want to build a dam on the Brahmaputra River which is high in the Himalayan Mountain Range and the river runs through four countries with 80 million people relying on it. Two of those countries have fought border skirmishes and the latest skirmish was in May 5, 2020. The four countries are China, India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

  2. If China was to build this project, then the countries on the other side of the Himalayans, the Central Asian Countries, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, are concern on how this will affect their water supply since they share the melt off from the same water source, the glaciers on the mountains. China has assured them that they will honor their concerns, but since these countries have large Muslim populations and they have seen China’s treatment of the Uyghurs, they are leery of these promises.

  3. China wants to build a canal from the Three Gorges Dam to the eastern part of the country to help with the water needs, however they would have to go through mountain ranges and through farmland and environmentalists are not sure how this will affect the environment. However, since the levels at the dam are getting lower each day that proposal may be out, and the Chinese will feel they have no choice but to do the other option.

I’m going to put that down to “no one stays in one place anymore” category.

The problem with agriculture paying more for water means we pay more for all of our food stuffs. This and not growing the right thing in the correct climate.

In 2021, the price of electricity tripled in Norway. I’ve recently read it has doubled again in 2022. EV sales have been falling for the last 4 months. Norway used to lead the world in EV sales.
Part of the problem is they depend on cheap hydroelectric power. The reservoirs are drying up due to lack of rain. Norway is the largest exporter of power to Europe. If levels keep falling they may have to ration power to Europe and also in their own country.

It’s a terrifying novel.

Charlie Pierce has been writing about water for some time. Nobody seems to be listening.

Climate Chaos is here and now. Most people want to remain ignorant of the enormous catastrophe coming our way so they can continue their lives in a Normal World. Normal is gone. We have known about Climate Change for 50 years. There is no more ignoring the Laws of Physics. Since we refuse to Change, the ecosystem will do it for us. Change could have been simple and painless, now it will be painful and violent.
The insects are disappearing. The Salmon will soon be gone. The Great Extinction is upon us.
Sorry for the Reality Check.

I may have to give this one a try. I read his “Ship Breaker”, and liked it a lot.

I have a acquaintance on FB who is also a former Border’s employee. He posted about having to run up to the library to loan one of the librarians his copy of Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman”. All copies of “Sandman” were either checked out, and the wait list is too long.
I mention this because it seems if an author that has written about a important subject wants attention, then their book has to either come out in a graphic novel, or Netflix series to reach a broader audience.

Don’t laugh.
It is the first level of a much more comprehensive social project.
This is just the footing of a much larger water-entrapment foundation footprint.
Every federal impoundment can be magnified by creating smaller tributary “sacrifice lakes” that themselves are surrounded with temporary ponds.
The wet/dry cycles are growing extreme, so trap the water when it rains and release it when its dry. Just takes some low dams and berms that can be built in the dry times.

Seriously, we can change everything if money and labor are used wisely. Right now we’re not doing that at all across much of the world.
