He didn’t have to plan it. His supporters were openly conspiring online to do the insurrection. All he needed to do was egg them on, then kick back and watch the chaos ensue.

It would depend on how far the definition of “planning” was applied. Trump laid the groundwork for months before the election, saying the only way he would lose would be if the election was rigged. Then he kept hammering that theme all the way from November 2nd to the speech on January 6th.
A reasonable person might conclude that Trump’s prior actions constitute planning in advance for an act of insurrection when things didn’t go his way, and without needing personal conversations with the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. They were just a small part of that event.

Of course that was the strategic calculation. Horde takes hostages and then, after a “decent interval,” the government “negotiates” with the horde and makes some “compromise” concession to them that ends up leading to the vote not proceeding, Trump declaring a national emergency and holding onto power. Flynn, Meadows Patel, of course that’s what their hope and game plan was. Putinesque coup plotting 101.
And he was certainly a dangerous president.

Ok, here’s where I jump in with PLEASE read Seth Abramson’s twitter! I subscribe to his articles. I know he seems to have a rep as someone not quite credible, but do not know why, especially re-this.
He has nothing BUT critical info and details (which seems to me to resemble evidence, but you be the judge). Planning and coordination between the trump White House, Trump Campaign, Trump Family, Trump Lawyers, Donors, Stone, Brannon, Flynn, Ali Alexander, Alex Jones, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and other dirtbags, Senators and Congresspeople, State Reps. All coming together in the days before 1/6 in the Trump hotel in DC, the Willard Hotel, and I think the Marriott too.
I have no idea WHY mainstream media hasn’t at least taken a cursory look at the info he’s pieced together (all from public, verified sources). Seriously, it’s all there.

I’ll read that link later when I have time, but here’s the sticking point that I can’t get past on all the prior planning stuff other than what Trump himself did. It isn’t sufficient to explain what happened, and it diverts blame from the prime instigator.
A cabal of Stone, Flynn, Proud Boys etc. couldn’t gin up the sheer number of people that assaulted the Capitol. Some of that group may have egged them on, but it wasn’t necessary. Trump himself prepped the crowd of true believers for months. They showed up in DC, he stoked up their anger, then aimed and fired them at the Capitol.
Trump may have had some pre-planned help with smaller elements of the crowd like the Proud Boys, but most of the crowd of idiots who stormed the Capitol were not part of that. Trump alone did that.
