Yes, good comments. Having been an emotional radical in my youth, I am not without empathy. But at 72 I am now a huge fan of lesser evil in all walks of life. This kind of wisdom can only be earned by pounding your head against a brick wall for decades. If this is what gives the election to Trump, it will be deja vu all over again squared.
My impression is that they feel like they share responsibility for the shortcomings of whomever they do vote for; but, are in some way are able to wash their hands of the acts of the person they didn’t vote for, even if their failure to support the imperfect opponent empowers Attila the Hun.
This strikes me as the result of an emotional disposition towards a stark apportioning of responsibility, as @hummus_neanderthalensis says [194, above,] and not rational thought and, so, will not be subject to change by argument.
Sure, and when the Japanese shelled Fort Stevens with a submarine’s deck gun, the commander retreated because they were “outgunned.” Our racist blinders aside, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and most people knew it, grotesque ethnic caricatures not withstanding. I’m sure some people did believe that, but the downed pilot who was killed on Niihau should have been all the refutation required. I guess it is a good thing some people could face reality through their bigotry.
During the 2020 and 2022 election my daughter attended a college that is 40% AA, and she was shocked how apathetic they were about elections. I guess that since the Civil Rights Struggle is something that happened so long ago many young black people have taken those rights for granted and they don’t feel obligation to protect them, even as the rednecks in the State Lege are doing all they can to restrict AA vote. Lets not forget that women took Roe for granted too, and look what happened.
They should take A.E. Houseman’s advice:
And malt does more than Milton can
To justify God’s ways to man.
Ale, man, ale’s the stuff to drink
For fellows whom it hurts to think:
“pro-life” Steve Bannon wants more bloodshed in schools…
The idea of lesser evil is always a pet peeve of mine. The choice is between a evil and a compromise.
So he wants queer kids to threaten others with guns?
It seems suicidal to me: but if you feel grievance to the people with power closest to you, one may well overlook the obvious things: and let your real enemies take power in their stead.
Most of the hostile Left I’ve had to deal with have some personal, or at least emotional, grievance toward the “establishment Democrats” as they perceive them.
Reason don’t really enter into it.
I watched that series; I was aware of the parallels with current events, but that film really brougham them home.
It’s lame excuses for apathy.
My father was in the South Pacific during WW2. He was at Okinawa, and he was sent into Nagasaki not long after the bomb was dropped. He was on an LST. When I was a kid he told me that meant long slow target. I totally believed him. He might have been the exception to the rule, but my father thought the Japanese were very smart and he thought many of them were brave fighters. It might have been men like him that taught the kids to play baseball. Pearl Harbor and the Philippines created a lot of hard feelings.
I knew an old man that survived the Bataan death march and he was still pissed off decades later. That is one thing about being a boomer, we grew up hearing those stories. The men who fought in that war were our fathers and our uncles. Our grandparents had to watch them leave. I had one uncle that was reported missing when he was in northern Africa. He was badly wounded and when he was able to talk the first thing he did was ask the nurse to send a letter to his mother so that she would know he was alive. That war was still present in the culture for years after it was over.
Interestingly, I’ve see GOP/MAGAt types, some politicians, assert that bullying is important to protect us against the LGBTQ demonic horde.
Their idea of discipline is mostly child abuse, anyway.
For those of you on Instagram, there is a new post from historycolored that shows a mugshot of a guy with the same damn haircut. His last name, somewhat interestingly, is Orange…he was born in 1907
Sorry… I never learned to copy & paste here
Same difference.
late last night I watched some of the web cam video. It is amazing.
Well he likely just means racist and incels.
