She’ll Chow on it
Did you see the second story about how the wall needs gates at the bottom left open all summer to avoid getting washed out by flash floods? That was even better (this appears to be a long-standing problem with border fences- not just trumps wall)
OK. So, Alexander is a No, Collins and Romney appear to be Yes. Murkowski, whatever – they need 4. I believe Collins and Romney knew Alexander was a No before declaring their Yes intent: that is how you can have your cake and eat it too. So, no witnesses, regardless of Collins and Romney. And they will vote to acquit – with the caveat that they will further strategize to also have that cake and eat it too. Such players! Is America great or what?
Pllleeeessse. What counterfactual nonsense. If they’d contested subpoenas in court, Trump would never have been impeached. The court battles, and battles over the battles, and side battles, and subsidiary battles, ad nauseam would have been dragged in for the balance of 2020 for certain. Any of them that made it to the SC would have been decided in Trump’s favor 5-4.
The Ds had little choice but to do what’s been done. And the outcome in the Senate was as predictable as tomorrow’s sunrise in the east.
There is plenty of evidence that they intend to assure there is never a presidential D again. End. Game.
Why would you assume that such a power grab has no immediate consequence?
Enraged and frightened people who will try to vote in an election that’s been rigged/tampered with, shat upon, because the King says its okay and his party and the AG say it’s okay.
I can relate. Keeping up with all of this has made me feel soiled and damaged. Since Bonespurs took office we have all waited with baited breath for something to come along that would result in his removal or resignation and it has only gotten much worse and it will keep getting worse. At some point you have to retreat because you realize there’s no way of winning the battle. You wait for the right time to reengage. Unfortunately, I do not believe that will be in my lifetime. It’s starting to feel like we have entered that long horrible period in Spain under Franco.
Why would Republicans want to create the precedent that a president is unbound by laws? Answer: they plan to never allow another Democratic president in their lifetimes. They may succeed. Republicanism is fascism. It’s here.
Voter suppression plans are moving forward in every possible state. Hell, in Minnesota, which has a Dem governor, the GOP has declared voter ID its top priority even though they know it’s going nowhere. When it fails, they will campaign on it this fall. It’s coming to a statehouse near you soon if it’s not already there.
National GOP leadership is confident the Russian ratf*king is going to win it for Trump. They’re also confident that four years from now there will be vote suppression in effect in more than enough states to make outside help redundant. That’s the plan.
You’ll be back. Just unload the political here and don’t bother the fam with it.
Yes. that is the only reasonable conclusion one can draw.
That is the whole point of the Unitary Executive. What I’m afraid of is how fast it can all happen. It will be like the Weimar Republic during it’s cultural heyday. That essentially got shut down overnight.
One implication of that I’d like to say explicitly, even if everyone already realizes it: That scenario includes a Department of Justice purged of corrupt partisans and hacks by the Democratic president I assume comes with the package and rededicated to the utmost impartiality and professional ethics. And then we investigate that son of a bitch Trump and all his henchpersons for their shocking, unprecedented crimes until hell won’t have it. Let them be destroyed for all time and drag the GOP down with them. Just saying.
But you know he won’t. He’ll just sit there like a block of wood.
Ha! If only! That is coming.
I think we’re already in 1933…
Yep, though a comparison to Vichy France also works, except that we weren’t conquered militarily. We were bought.
What the Dems need is someone who can truly beat Trump, like Michelle Obama.
Trumps’ lawyer included an argument that mentioned the “Biden Rule” where supposedly Biden said no need for witnesses during the Clinton impeachment.
I thought there was also the “Biden Rule” used as an excuse to block the Merlick Garland nomination as well. (and don’t forget Joe’s buddy Clarence Thomas)
Not forgetting his son’s employment history, all Joe has to do now is show up at the World Trade Center and faint this summer.
Joe Biden , the gifts keep coming.
I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Stated more seriously, mattinpa is spot on. What we are seeing here is a coup d’etat. The only way to curb it is through a relentless application of the criminal law by a succeeding Administration dedicated to restoring the rule of law. And for that we have to win in November.
Alexander is the GOP’s canary in the coal mine. They’re seriously considering letting Trump skate. The only disincentive is how pissed America will be. Alexander volunteered because he’s retiring anyway.
A trial without evidence is a horrific travesty. By rights, the People should be up in arms over the threat. So, tonight is the GOP’s experiment: how pissed will America get over being denied witnesses?
If we react strongly, the GOP may hesitate to acquit Trump. I think they’re (rightly) afraid that the House managers made their case completely, and that most Americans already believe Trump should be removed.
But I guarantee they will be more likely to acquit Trump if they get no reaction from us over neutering the trial and hurrying towards the verdict.
Use that free FAX thing to contact Lamar Alexander and Mitch McConnell. I’m going to go track that down now, and then get busy composing.
If we don’t do something now, we’re gonna have to march before November.
I have to admit I’m a little puzzled. I’d say most everyone here has said firmly for months that there’s no way Trump would be convicted in the Senate and that they’d frustrate the effort to show his guilt in any way they could. But now, as that plays out exactly the way everyone damn near without exception predicted, lots of people are throwing themselves on the ground sobbing. What the Ever-loving Fuck is that about? We knew what we were dealing with! Jesus Christ, have none of you ever had a serious problem before? The reason they’re called problems is because they’re troublesome and inconvenient and take a long time to fix and sometimes they aren’t even fixable. Are we dead? Actually I feel fine, how’s the rest of the gang? Are we in concentration camps? Not me, I’m sitting here with a drink. Is the fight over? NO, MOTHERFUCKERS, THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER. Just stop with all the doomsday shit. Just. Stop. It was the same way with Mueller, everyone thought he would slay the beast and everyone gave themselves over to the blackest gloom when it didn’t work out that way. This is the fight of our time, and the beauty of it is it’s a question of persistence and ability to focus and put in effort over time. For Christ’s sake if you’re concerned go down to the local Democratic headquarters and ask about volunteering. If you don’t like what I’m saying, if you want to put the shoe on and declare it fits, come at me, bro. Explain what in any of this is wrong. Take it out on me, because I don’t mind. But go online tomorrow and make a plan to volunteer. Because it isn’t over.
