Continued baseless accusations of subversion risk further deepening the instability and polarisation in American society, and eroding public faith in institutions that is the bedrock of democratic life,” they wrote.

The statement from the group, which includes former presidents of Colombia, Finland, Mexico, and Norway, as well as former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, among others,

Even Norway? Oh, no! So not just “shithole” countries? That’s gotta hurt.

More seriously, it’s embarrassing to be lectured on our own principles by other governments, but this is where Republicans have led us. What’s good for the goose…

America is still in its infancy, and as far as democratic institutions go, we still have to put up or shut up just like the rest of the world.

“Regime” (in this case)=Organization coming to power quasi-“legitimately” and seeking to maintain power illegally.

Examples abound historically and/or geographically.

And some countries can recover.

These individuals are betting that the U.S. can recover.

So are we.

Democratic leaders better get their heads out of their asses and fight this insanity. If the Republican Cult steals the election there will be a civil war. I fear the armed Trump terrorists way more than ISIS.

Yep. America is not a democracy. It’s the world’s largest banana republic.

I’ve been meaning to ask this question of you all as I respect the deep well of knowledge on this board.

Did we not have fascistic tendencies in the US back in the 1930s? Powerful people like Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh, among others. If I’m not wrong about that, then what happened to break the fever back then? Because we had a pretty good run after WW II.

(1) We did not have FOX News

(2) POC were not deemed to be as much of a threat (Jim Crow handled most of us) then

On the last point, Barack Obama has weighed in on the explosion of overt racism which came about after his election. Ironically, we have still made strides with race relations, but it has not been as across the board as we would like.

You won’t like all these answers:

  1. Yes.

  2. Among those others, you can include people like “Father Coughlin” on the radio.

  3. Biggest factors: WWII; post-war economic boom; and McCarthy losing the plot.

  4. After WWII we did not abandon fascism. We supported it around the world. (Why?)

Sounds like a thing one could set to music …

Wonder what kind of tact will be used to hand Trump this subpoena ? Another reason for all the confusion we are seeing from Trump he’s cornered on some many levels

Yeah, I’m not certain Trump can even read, and if he can, if he can understand sentences of more than 3-5 words. So this is wasted on him, but the message is likely not intended for him.

It would be even better if Greenland criticized him.
