A Surprise Challenger: Cicilline Announces He Will Run Against Clyburn For Leadership Spot

So much for the entire new House Democratic leadership team being selected by unanimous acclamation.

It doesn’t demonstrate leadership skills to wait until the last minute to announce. Especially if you have not done any serious campaigning for the position.

He’s probably not expecting to win. Most likely he just wants to be rewarded with something else for dropping out just as he did in 2018.

Cici campaigns on MSNBC every so often only it’s called a one on one interview with McDonnell.

Clyburn is too old to be a boomer…

I like both these guys. I’m glad Cicilline is challenging Clyburn. Clyburn couldn’t let go. I get it. But Cicilline shouldn’t have to wait quietly. He’ll lose to Clyburn. But he will have made his point.

An example of identity politics run amok … sounds like Cicilline’s only argument against Clyburn is that Clyburn is not Gay.

Clyburn is 82. Past time to go. Lost most of is his power when his hand-picked choice Jamie Harrison, in 2020, to take on Lindsey, got runover by ten points. A real embarrassment.

Cicilline also knows how to round up party members for votes. But let’s stick with the old guy because …

“With so much at stake, I think it is critical that the House Democratic Leadership team fully reflect the diversity of our caucus". Well, the House Democrative caucus does have a lot of really old people in it, so Clyburn helps reflect that.

Nancy was the Adult in the Room. Every Democrat needs to step up her/his game to compensate.

Cut it out. Cicilline isn’t a label. He’s a masterful vote-counter. He knows the job and is good at it, and has more energy in a high energy job than an 82 year-old.

He’s the last remaining congressman (since we’ve lost John Lewis and Elijah Cummings), of those who were there in the 60s fight for civil rights. He has a knowledge and history that no one else has. He deserves to be respected and honored.

He’s not a boomer. At least he doesn’t fit the definition of someone born between 1946-1954. Of course, I see that someone just had to add a Boomers II category, and he’s part of that (1955-1964). Hmmmm. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

He could do the job just fine, and Clyburn is probably winding down at 82. Clyburn has served this country well, but he’s not ready to go just yet, apparently.

You cut it out - Cicilline’s the one who expressly said his reason for challenging Clyburn was because there needs to be a LGBTQ person in the Dem leadership.

And you have a problem with that? Why?

What about his pick of Biden? He didn’t get run over and even though he was down my list of favorites in the primaries I think he’s turned out to be an exceptionally competent President.

The position was specially created for Clyburn to clear the way for Hoyer…Changing him out is not a sign of disrespect, but the need for a clean sweep in leadership. He’ll be ranking member on whatever committees he’s assigned to, so let that be his consolation prize.
