This is, I think, a muddy area.
For example, monetary payments with an exchange of territories as a settlement in a war are kinda like purchasing a territory.
And, in European history, whether any of the large private firms (British or Dutch East India Company, Hudson’s Bay Company, as examples) paid for exclusive rights to territories seems to border on buying land later politically incorporated into the home polity.
What do we really think about Mark Kelly as a Veep fit? Do he and Kamala have any synergy? I don’t know much about him, what his ‘presence’ would be like on the ticket. His wife is Gabby Gifford, gunned down in a rampage shooting. Not only is he military and LE, and tough on The Border, but could talk about gun control.
Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly narrowed down her choice for presidential running mate to a small number of choices, and Arizona Republic columnist Phil Boas believes that his state’s United States senator would be the perfect fit.
In his latest piece, Boas argues that Republicans aren’t afraid of running against Harris, but they “absolutely should” be scared if she picks Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) as her running mate.
In particular, he argued that Kelly’s biography as a Navy fighter pilot and NASA astronaut were likely to be highly appealing to swing voters.
Added to this, he writes, Kelly’s parents were both police officers, which would make him an ideal messenger to rebut Republicans’ attacks that Democrats are “soft on crime.”
I don’t know about synergy, but a retired Navy Captain helps knock out one of the classic media attack lines about Dems being weak on national security issues.
We avoided that with Biden because of his extensive record in foreign relations, with him out, it’s one of the low-hanging fruit the media will reach for.
Also, due to the extremely extensive background checks he’s gone through both in the Navy and as an astronaut, this is one guy who is quite unlikely to have any hidden things that oppo research can dig up to exploit. I like not having to stress about an October surprise.
This was always my thought when the yuksters said we should take over Iraq and take their oil. Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to buy the oil?
Yeah but in your examples was there an actual check?
( from the National Archives)
Probably would have gotten a better deal if Donald Trump had negotiated the purchase price. s/
Yep, having to set up a new government. Do a census of who is who. Then we’d have to pay to repair infrastructure that we ourselves destroyed in the takeover.
Setting up an empire is not cheap.
Anyone have a link to today’s Morning Memo comments page?
Thanks, in advance.
Yeah, just like with Greenland.
Or those oil wells in Syria, where it was like he was dealing with a contractor for the Trump, Corp.
As for how money was transferred in the 17th and 18th centuries, or before, IDK.
This is absolutely the truth. Many, many men like to gaslight us, control us, order us around, deny us our rights, don’t work along side us for our rights, denigrate us, give us less money for the same jobs, minimize our abilities, maximize making fun of us for our very physiologies that allow us to bring “their” children in to the world.
One thing I have to say about TPM is that largest majority of men here are not misogynists. But the ones that are, are some of the most powerful/popular members of the forum. And most of us (even women), all seem to be attracted to those “leaders of the pack.” These can be identified by their usual lack of emotional intelligence, inability (or refusal) to recognize strengths or ideas from others who disagree with them, and a general lack of humility and insight into to their own nature.
Without women, you can’t get very far in life. It takes all of us to make the world turn smoothly. And that includes non-binary people, too. Just my take on things.
But only on his terms now, including Faux News hosting and “moderating,” and throw out all the restrictions.
Here at the home in Tempe we are asked as part of the admission process who will take responsibility for our pets should we no longer be able. Our granddaughter has said Max the minidach can come to live with her in that event. Our son along with our son-in-law is coming in a couple of weeks to take the pickup I no longer need to live with them in Texas. I’ll be watching to see how Max and son-in-law get along with each other during the visit. I expect it to go well, and give Max a chance to store son-in-law’s scent olfacturily so there will be familiarity should Max also someday be going to live in Texas.
Last night an older white guy was added, Gov. Tim Walz from Minnesota. A state TFG had announced a focus on. Walz first warned the GQP not to focus on race with Harris, among other things. Then last night he was on MSNBC and his consideration for VP was out there. Walz is also co-chair of the Democratic convention rules committee. Harris contacted him within hours of Biden’s announcement, he just didn’t show up anywhere. Now this -
Gov. Walz draws fire from Trump as he appears on ‘short list’ for VP.
Right now I am firmly in the ‘pop’ column. I think the way to a ‘wave’ campaign season is energy and youth and hope. Not sure where Walz fits on that spectrum. I am from MN originally and live in the next state over. However, I have never really seen him speak or even seen any ads. Unless he is really telegenic and brings The Juice…I would advise them to look elsewhere!
Try this:
This is a marvelous ad. It should be played all over the country 24/7.
It’s 4 years old.
Still even more appropriate today.
A full moon in October is likely to reveal the baggage he’s left up there.
On the dark side.
It’s an interesting and important statement regarding the internet platform we all find ourselves commenting on regarding current US politics. What Talking Points Memo may not realize is that with the “moderate” or center-left or center-right American voter, we are looking for a platform where we can express our views on current American politics. Some (or many of us find ourselves here).
