What state is this happening again in? Oh, right, the least corrupt state in the US or…?
Thank you. A great article and a splendid example of the classic ‘white-collar’ crime.
Liberty spent about 56 cents of every dollar it took in from members in that state on medical expenses in 2019 and 2020, a figure that would be scandalous if it were an insurance company.
I could tell you I was shocked but that would be a lie. One thing is certian, the people who bought in were not advised of the Pot farm. Pat Robertson must be damning his luck, and he only built a water park.
This is something that is absolutely screaming for government regulation at the state or national level, but since the grifters are all cloaking themselves in religious rhetoric and have grown powerful enough to lobby for exemptions to the kinds of regulations real insurance companies have to follow, here we are. I fear at this point it’s going to be next to impossible to change anything until so many people’s lives are destroyed that their stories start gaining real traction outside of ProPublica pieces like this, which, face it, is fantastic journalism but isn’t exactly being trumpeted on the front page of the NYT or CNN, much less Fox, which is what the majority of the people affected by this probably watch.
But still true, even for pro publica. When income goes south, look at who pays the price.
Living here in the Bible Belt, I have found myself making this exact argument. One dear friend, in particular, was profoundly upset at the impending split within the United Methodist Church. As I was explaining my absolute lack of sympathy, he had to concede that the greater church had kicked the “cans” down the road, because they didn’t want to piss off the (insert adjective here) sheep. In this case, it’s particularly an issue of homophobia. While he is a senior white male, who had previously accepted the received “wisdom” of homophobia (because doctrine ), he since has challenged his fellow congregants (at a pair of tiny rural circuit churches) by asking them whether they would turn him away if he suddenly came out as gay. That challenge has apparently changed the calculus for at least one of those churches. Thankfully. sigh
