5 Points On How GOP Leaders Feared Their Extremist Colleagues After Jan. 6

The hits just keep on coming for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA): On Tuesday, the New York Times published even more bombshell recordings of a call he had with other House GOP leaders on Jan. 10, 2021, about the Capitol insurrection and far-right lawmakers’ role in it.

I’m slow on the uptake here, but are we assuming all these audio recordings were made by McCarthy, and he handed them over to the committee? He’s the common denominator. Or did these recordings come from some other source?

It’s making me nauseous but i think i agree with gaetz when he said, "This is the behavior of weak men, not leaders,” mccarthy and scalise: profiles on cowardice

There is lots of speculation where the calls are coming from. In particular, who would gain from McCarthy being taken down? Steve Scalise and Cheney were both quick to deny that the tapes were from them.

I do not know who was all on the call to include staffers, but it is unlikely the tapes were turned over by McCarthy himself. Perhaps a McCarthy staffer with a conscience? Perhaps another Republican(s) trying to take down McCarthy with a hope of paving the way to speaker Jim Jordan or Stefanik. In fact one column I read specifically fingered Stefanik as most likely considering her total lack of any morals and her ambitions causing her to say and do anything for power.

But who provided the tapes to the NYT at this point is still speculation.

[“That would mean we would have a Republican Congress led by a puppet of the Democratic Party,” Carlson declared with a straight face.]

Carlson and Gaetz approach Trump in the sense of a being spoiled brats seldom having had the need to be the least bit concerned about responsibility, accountability or culpability for one’s actions. Bratty, pampered toddlers.

Are you having a hard time trying to decipher what Tucker is talking about? What’s his point?
I’m having a hard time and realizing now that it is all wasted, so…never-mind.

Since a pandemic, impeachment, massive financial corruption, locker room talk, etc. all were a big meh, we can finally figure out what will get them to turn against somebody: that somebody doing the right thing for a second or two.

Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns had the tapes. They released it to Maddow because they anticipated McCarthy would dispute their research.

The GOP died years ago. Sheer momentum, and old school Republicans who can’t accept the fact that their party has died, is what is keeping it going. There are no such things as moderate Republicans, and any who claim so are part of the problem through their silence (shock?) as that makes them complicit. The veneer of respectability has been striped from the Republican Party, exposing their true beliefs and policies for all to see. Stop treating the Republican Party as something that should be maintained or treated as an equal or viable organization - it is no longer functioning. They realize they are in a desperate situation as demographics are clearly moving against them, so it’s now or never. Let’s all work to ensure it is never - their actions simply hurt people.

Those open hearings couldn’t come soon enough, timed to peak shortly before the elections of course. FUCK YEAH they should be politicized, after decades of the GOP doing that but on made-up bullshit controversies and with the fate of our republic in the balance. Nothing illegal and in the instance unethical about it and if Repubs don’t like it then that means that it’s working so fuck them.

Also, speaking about making good use of that bully pulpit and power, I hope that the FTC, SEC, DoJ or whatever regulatory and investigatory agency looks into the legality of Musk buying Twitter. The very rich and powerful should not be allowed to own their own megaphones, at least without boards or overseeing bodies that they don’t appoint or control that have real teeth. He’s going to try to use Twitter to push his megalomaniacal and narcissistic worldview and agenda on the world and get all sorts of bad things to happen and that’s just dangerous and can’t be allowed, or at least allowed to be this easy.
