So Ron and Rick want to go against history? Inconceivable!

While the actual federal budget was in surplus when economic activity was
expanding, it moved to a deficit during the three recessions of 1953-
1954, 1957-1958, and 1960, and there was no attempt to raise taxes to
offset the reduction in revenue associated with the downturn.
Surpluses were illusory, since there was still a large federal deficit from WWII spending and the Great Depression.
The U.S. actually did become debt free, for the first and only time, at the beginning of 1835 and stayed that way until 1837. It remains the only time that a major country was without debt.

Under both Truman and Eisenhower, the top marginal rate was 94% on income above $400,000 annually. Ike restricted spending, even in recession, and refused to lower taxes.

OMG! It’s like MI county clerks of election don’t know their job responsibilities.

The comment count read 3 and there were only two comments made by people so I contend dicobot has buggered us all!

As someone in a 100% vote-by-mail state here in WA, all I can do is look on and shake my head in frustration at states that use in-person voting machines.

There’s a better way, but no Red state legislature wants to use a method that actually expands the franchise.

One can only hope, but I fear the hope would be in vain.

Well, from the comments:

As someone who has worked directly with voting machines in my local county elections department, responsible for setting up and preparing them for an election I can tell you that there are numerous safeguards to each machine. Serial # of each machine, matched with the serial # for each data cartridge, matched with the person handling said machine to the video recorded of the transaction - all of this is stored in more than 1 place. The serial # CAN be matched to the corresponding County to which it belongs.

At this point, it’s a kind of reverse-lottery. Whichever county clerk was responsible for that voting machine is hoping his (serial) number does NOT come up.

R’s out there are already trying to blame this on Dems. When the likelihood is that it was mishandled or stolen by an R.

From Republicans too? Frankly, that’s very surprising to me.

“Inspired by pro-union sentiment in political movements, such as Bernie Sanders’ presidential bids, Black Lives Matter and the Democratic Socialists of America

Wow. That is a rather fanciful “observation”!

Other than statements on websites, “sentiment”, or getting their faces on camera once the hard-fought organization activities have borne fruit, I see absolutely no reason to include any of these groups in the recent labor organizing successes!

The only real support from union labor has been from rank and file Democrats. Period. I follow labor pretty closely and to even suggest Bernie, AOC or BLM has had ANYTHING to do with the recent surge in union labor interest is risible!

Speechifying is great, but anyone can do that. I’m really annoyed when the Bernie-left swoops in to claim they were “fighting for us!” when in reality, I cannot think of a single legislative achievement from him or any of the DSA campaigns for office ever. Did he have unionized campaigns ever? Did he even pay his campaign workers $15 bucks an hour? I doubt it. Let’s leave all that knob-slobbering out of the facts.

The constant drip of mismanagement and embezzlement from the official BLM team would suggest they try to fly under the radar for awhile too, no?

I get VBM and all of it’s ease, ability to research and make a decision in your own setting. But I like going to vote. It’s symbolic to me that I’m participating in my civic duty among other people doing the same thing.
Beside with VBM I’ll never get to see the guy that works my polling place in his kilt. Besides I get a free pen every time I go and vote.

When I accepted a faculty position on an organized faculty, it took me no time at all to join the union. It was the only sensible thing to do:

  1. I would either join and pay my union dues, or I would be assessed the representation fee. The difference was less than $10/month.
  2. What did I buy for about $100 a year? I got to vote on the contract negotiated on our behalf. Non-members don’t get a vote. I got a voice in the negotiation process, in that I had direct access to the union representatives on the negotiating team. Non-members got reports on the status of negotiations, but only had access to the faculty members of the team.
  3. The most common argument I heard against union membership was, “I don’t like the union’s political positions (or activities or efforts or whatever).” As a member, I had input into those positions. (I think you all here know me well enough by now to know that I wasn’t trying to make any changes in the AAUP positions on anything.)

I don’t work in Academe any more, but I have seen the advantages of a unionized workplace for knowledge workers. I’m pretty content with my current position, but if someone started organizing us I’d listen carefully and probably vote to unionize.

Paper Moon was a terrific film from 1973 with Tatum O’Neal who won an Oscar at 10 years old and Ryan O’Neal who is her father played her father. It’s still available on Amazon Prime. Don’t remember anyone preaching to a union organizing event, but there were some shenanigans around bootleg hooch.
