Discussion: 'What Is The Purpose': Trump Tweet Further Imperils House GOP Immigration Push

Some good news in that the Administration has declined to prosecute around 16 border crossers because they came as head of household, meaning they had families. If that becomes implemented nationwide, then we may have put a stop to this family separation practice and can focus on reuniting the kids who were kidnapped with their families.

President Trump dumped cold water all over House Republicans’ flickering efforts to pass a major immigration bill on Thursday, undercutting their already-unsteady push with just hours to go before scheduled votes with a tweet.

There are scheduled votes with a tweet?

Are you kidding me? I could have been avoiding the line at customs? I’ve got tri-citizenship, a heap of passports and nobody bothered to tell me there is a password?? Thanks a lot, Democrats Abroad! See if I make any future donations.

And he learned it from a tweet someone else wrote for him.

He’ll forget it tomorrow.

And just wait until a Dem (some day) takes the same office.

You know darned well that person will never be able to do ANY of this.

Of course the administration completely ignores the damage already done to separated families. The good news is that volunteers, teams of human rights organizations and attorneys working pro bono, are now navigating the labyrinth of bureaucracy to repair this. As they work to fix it, the administration keeps breaking it. Families are still being separated as we speak, and more children being flown to secret jails.

Since the Congressional Republicans are now completely domesticated and voluntarily neutered by trump, they don’t dare anger him, or even suggest that they might oppose him. They can’t utter a word without trembling in fear about what trump might tweet about it.

They’re worse than useless.

I wish this was clear. Dems might draw back from the nastiest outer reaches, especially as regards internal policy, but they’re still likely to operate within a ratcheted, ever-larger sphere of autocracy. Cf. Obama’s conduct of the GWOT.

Plus, after the Dem comes the next R. Someone better organized than Trump will be able to make a lot more out of the power he’s gaining for them.

“The reason he was there was to emphasize he had our backs and I think a different message was sent that day.”

Pfft. Mr. Labrador, POTUS needed to demonstrate his dominance and thus the jab at Sanford. Put away any notion that he will ever have your back. Trump and loyalty to Trump are the only thing Trump cares about.

The Orange Idiot is claiming that people are being “coached” to ask for asylum at the border. His ignorance and bigotry are limitless.

There’s been a 1000% increase in Trump’s pouty 7-year-old pose lately. The decent into megalomania and paranoia is accelerating.

This!
From the article.

His tenure has been marked by an extraordinary level of drama, but on some level, relatively little has actually happened in reality. But when things have happened, Trump has been unequal to the task of handling them. Last year’s hurricane season created a catastrophe. The return of Central American asylum seekers to their pre-Trump level immediately devolved into a humanitarian crisis. America’s relationships with its traditional allies are in tatters for no real reason. China is relaxing its enforcement of sanctions on North Korea, and Iran is opening a new nuclear facility.

I’d never heard about Branson’s meeting. Wow:

(Warning: the last paragraph may induce tears…)

Of course @khyber900 is right. I came here to make much the same point, which most of us here realize: Trump is driven entirely by his base impulses, which he has also come to see as his key to political success. What other reason was there to reject Dems’ offer last year to give him his damn wall (or rather, to vote for the money; the stupid thing’ll never be built) in order to save the Dreamers? And of course they’d do the same in a heartbeat to get him to stop abusing desperate parents and kidnapping their kids. But then he and Stephen Goebbels and their cult couldn’t share the satisfaction of tormenting brown people and liberal snowflakes, which Bannon tells him is the key to electoral victory.

The political irony is that, far from diminishing them, IMO Trump could improve his party’s chances in November if he could table his venomous hatred long enough to take the Dems up on their offer and get all this behind him and remove a huge motivation for many people to turn out and vote D. (IIRC, his and the GOP’s poll numbers improved as Charlottesville and DACA, not just health care, dropped out of the headlines.) But he, and the other monsters behind this monstrous policy, just can’t control that venom; ridding us of the “infestation” is what drives them. Monsters.

Sigh… Last year, we were spared the worst possible damage from this administration’s efforts by what Ben Wittes memorably characterized as their “malevolence tempered by incompetence.” This year, it’s looking like we’ve reached the “malevolence exacerbated by incompetence” stage of the Trump presidency. Lord help us.

Once we remove him from office, try him and throw him in jail awaiting punishment - he needs to be waterboarded every day for about 6 hours.

Perhaps he’s been hearing that in all likelihood the R’s in the house won’t even be able to agree on anything enough to get a simple majority. So best to start blaming the Senate rules instead of looking like you can’t even get your own s*t together. Again.
