The great irony that I noticed was that the AEM church where the shooting took place was on Calhoun Street. John C. Calhoun was, of course a Representative and Senator from South Carolina and was a strong proponent of states rights and slavery, the father of the nullification doctrine, and a progenitor of the Confederacy.
He is one of the few Americans to be pictured on Confederate States stamps, which mostly featured Jefferson Davis.
