Discussion: Sanders Pledges To Help Defeat Trump, But Still Won't Endorse Clinton

Lisa Bonet? Isn’t she about 50 now?

Speaking of Shemar Moore, his on-screen “Criminal Minds” relationship with Penelope Garcia is a regular source of cringeworthy laughter in our household.

Then why do you continually upbraid the commentary?
When-- what is posted on a thread at TPM?
Makes not one whit of difference as to whether Sanders voters come in from the cold.

This is a good point. There was an editorial in the NYT yesterday or the day before noting that Bernie is out of step with actual contemporary progressives and is basically an old school progressive (a contradiction in terms?),recycling stuff from the past. That has always been my view. As someone whose mother was a member of the Communist Party in the 50s and whose father worked with Mark Lane I must say Sanders’ line and whole attitude seemed all too familiar and a bit tired–not totally but in large part. (And for the record I will note that it’s not really my parents’ attitude that I found tiresome–my mother moderated as she got older and my father was always a total cynic–but those of their friends and associates.)

To me someone like Elizabeth Warren represents a quite different point of view, as far as progressives go.

Can I just add this is just from 2 speeches attaching Trump and virtually no ad barrage. And no focus on the biggest negative issues for him. This is from light attacks.

Let’s see what the first round of ads starting this week in swing states do.

No “becoming” about it he is irrelevant. Buh, bye birdie.

In the long run, this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Simply put: Bernie Sanders is not very savvy. What was the purpose of that live speech? By and large it was no more than a repeat of the stump speech he’s been giving for over a year. Any reasonable supporters he has have heard this all before. They have already realized he’s not going to win and have moved on. The deadenders may be loud but they are not the majority. At this point, this is nothing more than a temper tantrum because he didn’t get his way.

So he gives a stump speech in front of a bad PowerPoint slide to what end? His leverage decreases with each passing day. My guess is he went into his meeting with HRC with a list of demands and was politely told by the good lady what he could do with those demands, which was a repeat of what he was told by President Obama a few days before. And he hurt himself further by not joining in the filibuster with the Democrats. Everyone’s moving on. Bernie is like the Bruce Willis character in The Sixth Sense. He hasn’t figured out that he’s already dead.

I think it’s time for those of us who really care about ensuring that Donald Trump is soundly defeated in November should take our cue from our candidate and move on without Bernie Sanders. He’s irrelevant to the process at this point. He won’t bow out with grace or class and therefore is not deserving of our respect. In short, fuck this guy.

You forgot: it’s time for a revolution, where you overthrow the 1% in genetic wealth and spread it around…can’t quite make it work, too early in the morning…

@bluestatedon: if you see her you’d truly understand age is just a number…I think part of it is how active she seems to be.

Actually what little I could stomach listening to (while he yelled) was much more about TAKING OVER the Democratic Party, not working within it. If he is a part of the Democratic Party he can add his voice to all the other voices. He seems more interested in dictating to the party than joining it.

Lisa Bonet ate no basil.

I saw Deaver on MSNBC this morning as I switched channels. He care across as “subdued”. But like his boss he does not give me the impression that Bernie and Mrs B want to be part of the Clinton team. Bernie wants to take on Trump…good for him. But I am not clear: does he want to do it within the Clinton campaign or is this a special self-serving assignment? I did not get the impression that he was part of the Democratic Party as it IS, as opposed to the Party as he would like it TO BE!

Bitter old man would rather stew in his impotent male rage than admit that he got beaten by a woman. Perhaps Sanders and Drumpf can go live on a deserted island together after the Nov. election.

I suppose some number of his more rabid supporters will be offset by the willingness of the likes of Meg Whitman and Richard Armitage to bring some Republicans along with them, grudgingly at least.

But Sanders and his extremist minions have been and continue to try and do damage to the chances of a Democratic victory in November. We end up having Trump himself to thank for helping the cause immeasurably.

I cannot WAIT for this year to be over.

By the way, does anyone remember any of these self-proclaimed true “progressives” calling John Kerry a “warmonger” and “neocon” in 2004 for his Iraq war vote?

As a former Bernie supporter who was a regular contributor to his campaign, I feel I am fully qualified to address this.

He is actively damaging his legacy now.

It is logically impossible to defeat Trump without supporting Clinton. He needs to be telling his supporters to support Hillary Clinton now. Period.

His failure to do the obvious and necessary is undermining his influence WITHIN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

I agree he is good man and did a good thing, whether it becomes a great thing depends on him staying in touch with reality and doing the right and necessary thing now.

Many good men are also deluded and ineffective visionaries who fail in the end to effectively promote their vision. Sanders is headed well down that road now. He needs to stop, back up, and take that other fork.

If Mr. Why-Should-South-Carolina-Even-GET-To-Vote has become Mr. 50-State-Strategy, then good for him. But it’s impossible for me to view this change of heart and call to arms outside the context of his Brand New Congress initiative. The one where he wants to recruit candidates to run against Republicans AND Dems.

He is not a good man. He is not a Democrat. He did not move the Party to the left. He is a pretend socialist of the 1930s era who lives in a world of his own. He is selfish and self centered and doesn’t even understand the policies he is advocating - Elizabeth Warren could wipe him out in five minutes of a discussion on income disparity and leave his slogans in tatters on the floor ( as the New York Daily News interview showed).
And there are many regular posters here that have a greater understanding of the issues he has been ranting about than he does. Anyone of them if allowed would wipe the floor with him. I would love the opportunity to sit across a table and challenge him to explain the differences of single payer health care, universal healthcare, medicare for all, european style healthcare (and further break down the differences amongst them). And for good measure I would throw in those Scandinavian countries he so loves. And if those cold countries are too complicated he needs to watch a few episodes of “Lillyhammer” and Stevie Van Zandt can give him some pointers (if you haven’t watched - Funny)

And THAT’S the thing right there. He can’t get people involved in all the things he’s listed (which, of course, are admirable) if he’s told them that the political system is rigged and not worth working within. At best, all that’ll happen is a bunch of people will latch onto the Greens, see that nothing is changing and then go back to being dejected that nothing is changing.

The livestream viewer count reported was about 96.5K, it certainly fluctuated throughout but nothing like “millions and millions.” I hear MSNBC was airing it but cut in the middle. I gave a read to the transcript plus followed media ppl’s live tweets. Didn’t see anything new in the speech… and poor video production quality with bad lighting and all. Not sure exactly what it was to accomplish… it just confirmed sad irrelevancy.

This. Exactly!

I have to take an issue with this statement. I think he did what he think is right. But being so sure of your own righteousness and thinking you are the only holder of the truth doesn’t fit with being a good man or wanting and achieving the common good.
