Discussion: Sanders At Liberty U: America's 'Racist Principles' And Bible Verses

Or course he didn’t get applause. The only way to get applause out of that crowd is to tell them what they want to hear .

Bernie, the thought running through the mind of each and every person in the audience was “And that’s just how it should be.”

Spittin’ in the wind; ya gotta try though.

Kudos to Bernie for doing this.

Perhaps he should have related the story of Daniel going into the lions den…that would seem very appropriate.

On the contrary, Bernie did get applause and cheers, but definitely not from everyone in the audience. It was remarkable how everone involved seemed to be trying very hard to be civil, and succeeding.

Well that’s a sound bite that will sink him.

That was exactly my thought when I read this during my morning read. The attack ad makes itself. He’s not wrong, though it’s not as simple as he says, but this is it for him. This will haunt him if he ever gets the nomination.

Normally a comment like that would raise my ire, but you can’t really argue that things like the 3/5 compromise weren’t racist; and the comment is the jumping off point to speak both of how as a country we have been moving forward and making great strides and that BLM type problems are injustices that must be addressed.

Do we have photos or video of the audience? I’d like to see its composition.

I am not talking abut the merits of what he said.

I am saying, this sound-bite will destroy any chance of him winning the Presidency.

The fact he calls himself a Democratic-Socialist was already going to be a tough hurdle to clear. This sound bite will be run 24/7 if he makes it to the General and will slaughter him at the polls.

Which is a shame because I support his positions 95% of the time.

I respect Senator Sanders for speaking at Liberty University, but which he had not. He is just giving Liberty U. respect that past democrats would have never done. Well, in reality Senator Sanders is no democrat, but an independent. Even President Obama never spoke there.

Daniel in the lion’s den. Well he just handed Trump a big dose of STFU about Bernie having no courage, after he let those false flag BLM people speak.

Not if you’re a sensible person (though bear in mind that, to show how people misunderstand it, counting slaves as a full person would have been more racist), but a very large proportion of the electorate is not sensible.

Liberty U Crowd

Kind of hard to make out the racial mix though.

Now that’s a dumb thing to say. Waaaay too easy to drop off all the qualifiers he puts before it and just use the “racist principles” soundbite. Just dumb to say it.

And not altogether accurate either. The principles our nation was founded on are that all people are created equal and that every individual is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Courageous leaders from William Garrison to Harriet Tubman to Frederick Douglass to Susan B. Anthony to Martin Luther King to Harvey Milk to Dan Savage to BLM today – they’ve given their all to help our nation finally live into these founding principles.

It’s fair for any American alive today whose ancestors were declared 3/5 of a person to agree with Sanders about the “racist principles”; it’s unpleasant, but it’s a reality that must be faced.

Why does this article contain no link to a video of the speech and discussion following it, or am I missing something? It would be nice, to say the least, for us readers to be able to judge audience reactions for ourselves. I understand TPM’s support of the center-establishment presidential candidate, but c’mon, please respect your readers’ ability to judge for themselves based on original sources.

Gosh, all this time I thought it was founded on genocidal principles, specifically Native Americans, for the great land grab promulgated by Manifest Destiny.

Diversity is a nightmare at that school. #811 in the country. 48% white, 25% who refused to enter their ethnicity (I’m guessing the large percentage of whom are white) 18% AA.

Here’s faculty diversity:
African American: 3%
Asian American: 2%
Hispanic: 2%
International: 3%
Native American: 1%
White: 90%
Unknown: 0%

“The principles our nation was founded on are that all people are created equal and that every individual is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…”

…if you’re a straight, white man (and likely also landed). I can’t imagine a lesbian having a fair go at life in 1800.
