Discussion: NBC News: Longtime DNC Officials Ousted Under Chairman Perez

Sure. And I’m excited to see this.

I just want to make the point clear that amongst the “politically aware left” or whatever you want to call us, we love to talk about, comment on, and gripe about all of this. It’s going to make a lot of people a lot of money, and the trollynews guys who pitch this as DemocratsInDisarray will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Wonder if they regret it now?

Josh has nice dunce caps but his stools are uncomfortable.

It’s hard for people who are standing up for their basic human rights to take calls for unity seriously when their positions are dismissed as “identity politics.”

Movements like American Black Cross should be waking people up to the fact that more and more, people are figuring out that if they aren’t represented by the system, they can create their own new system. So rather than telling them they should unify, it’s much more useful for those of us in the tent to figure out what is keeping them away and what we can do to meet them where they are.

Thank you.

Perhaps a stool softener might help.

Just not too much, or you could wind up like me.

Smart move to hold off on the illustration.

Figured my nickname was enough to make the point.

John Conyers (D-Michigan) has been introducing Medicare For All bills every year since 2004.

Also, I don’t think any but the most conservative of Democrats (who are rare) think universal healthcare is “too radical”, they just think getting it passed in one bill/one presidential term is unrealistic bordering on impossible… which is what Sander’s was selling.

It’s basically no big deal. Most of the people having conniption fits over this have no clue what the Democratic National Committee (DNC) actual does. Which, is set the rules for, and raise funds for, the next presidential campaign, for the Dem side. so we are a good three years from that, and this is just very preliminary stuff to set the structure for the campaign, most importantly right now is raise funds early. That’s basically all the DNC does. These people who think they invented politics just last year think that the DNC is some kind of evil mastermind of everything Democratic Party. But the truth is, the real power in the party lives at the state level. The state Parties do what they want, carry on business as they choose, according to state law.

So it’s a big nothingburger. Perez is putting some new blood on the committees to increase representation, and looks like getting rid of some of the most divisive, dishonest saboteurs, like Zogby. (Who’s been on the exec committee since 2001, so he’s not “new blood” he’s “old blood” hahaha. ) Isn’t that what the berniecrats are screaming for NEEWWWWW BBLOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!

People getting upset by this bureaucratic nothingburger just have no clue what they are talking about.

Lazy is right!! All of us out in the field trying to get HRC elected were astounded at the delays in getting instructions, answers to questions, and attention paid to local problems that mattered from the people at the top who insisted on controlling our every move but gave us no money. They even made people pay for yard signs— who came up with that brilliant idea? Get rid of Perez before It is too late. I am an older guy too but I know we as a group do not have the sensibilities or skills or command of social media necessary to win the next two elections.

As Hillary assumed.

At the time, I was a much older student at a very diverse campus, and I saw and heard the enthusiasm among the youth of all persuasions for Sanders. HRC just did not inspire them. Plus, the AAs whom I know were not as enamored of the Clinton years as the D voting percentage would lead you to believe. The campaign, however, missed that softness.

Thanks — I was beginning to doubt myself ‘cause it seemed like a big ho-hum. Thought maybe I missed something along the way.

“The DNC also raises money, hires staff, and coordinates strategy to support candidates throughout the country for local, state, and national office.”

So they do a lot more than just “set the rules for, and raise funds for, the next presidential campaign, for the Dem side.”

Meta culpa. I must’ve gotten lost in my loathing of that frustratingly prevalent phrase and its false insinuations. (Not yours, but the ones that whoever coined the term had in mind.)

As far as overlap, stated-goal-wise, I believe it was said that HRC and Bernie had a 96% overlap. So if HRC represents “the establishment” then there isn’t a lot of distance with the “rival wing.”

This suggests to me that that a core cabal of the Sanders wing are being perniciously opportunistic - or self righteously self absorbed. (Which plays perfectly into Russia’s and the Republicans’ hands.)

The way forward is compromise. Yes, the back and forth will be tough - but it is not going to be all or nothing. That’s not how democracy works, and those who refuse to participate, negotiate, and compromise in good faith are not democrats or socialists; they’re tyrannical theocrats who just happen to follow a different brand of oppressive Evangelicalism (so to speak).

When the team keeps losing they get a new coach and the coach gets to pick his assistants who will follow his philosophy and leadership. I wouldn’t want folks on this committee who backed an Independent over a Democrat. We need to move forward and start now.

If you ran an organization, would you want those who opposed your taking over the leadership to remain in positions of authority? So there are good abstract arguments for cleaning house. At the same time, we all will await whether Perez fills these positions with people who have the capability of unifying the very different streams of thought in the party. But not wait too long please. There is heavy lifting to be done before the mid-term elections.

Down ballot Democrats knew in 2008 and 2009 that the state legislative races would have a big impact on the makeup of the House post-census; the national Democratic party leadership did not appear to share this understanding. I hope Perez and his chosen officials correct this error this time around.
