Discussion: McConnell To Obama: Seek Approval From Congress On Action Against ISIS

Be careful what you wish for Mitch. Obama could easily force you to do something that alienates you with your base back home, namely backing an Obama policy.

Whatever Obama comes up with Wednesday night, it will either be:

a) too weak
b) too dictatorial
c) too Europe-based

And then the soundbite wars can begin.

Oh Cheney me.

I actually agree. This needs a war powers act resolution.

On a political level, this would be a good thing too, because when it goes pear shaped, and it will, it’s the Middle East, the Republicans will be on record for having voted on it.

Didn’t Obama already say he was going to do that? So now when he does it (as he is required to do by the War Powers Act anyway, right?) Mitchy can tell his Fox buddoes that Obama marches to his orders now?

Or what? Republicans will oppose everything that Obama wants? Oh, I know, if the President doesn’t seek congressional approval, Republicans will block immigration reform, right? Or, maybe, if Obama blows off Congress, they’ll hold another vote to repeal the ACA or, better yet, call for another House hearing into Benghazi, right? STFU and sit down, Senator.

Aw, look, the turtle’s eating out of the President’s hand…

Too bad old turtle. The Use of Military Force Authorization Act (or whatever the name is) you pushed through Congress for W makes it very clear he doesn’t have to ask your opinion about anything war related.

Maybe you should try looking forward to possible future ramifications of the bills you pass.

Mitch represents everyone in the country? I thought it was just people in Kentucky.

Why won’t he do something NOW?! (Obama is weak). [beat]
Why won’t he work with Congress?! (Obama is a tyrant).

Is this what the walking crypt Cheney discussed over lunch. Well, this is how the 9/11 Commission, judge your stun: http://thehill.com/homenews/217054-9-11-commission-rips-congress-on-isis

The Hill interviewed members of the 9/11 Commission, who didn’t shy away from criticizing congress, specifically, repubs. members of congress for turning the ISIS terror threat into partisan political issue:

The only reason Obama would prefer to bypass congress is that he wants to get something done.

only the rich ones…

On the one hand, you’ll have some Democrats voting against action in Syria because their constituents/base will not support military action under any circumstances. On the other hand, you’ll have plenty of Republicans voting against granting Obama authority to do anything, either because they’ll want Obama to instead just bomb any country east of the EU or because their constituents/base will not support Obama’s authority under any circumstances.

So we’ll be stuck with a very narrow coalition of support among the left, center-left, and center-right, which will take a hell of lot of political capital, cat wrangling and graft to get through both the Senate and the House in time for it to be effective.

Meanwhile, McConnell, Republicans, Chuck Todd, et al, will be jumping out of the woodwork to bash Obama for not taking action and not having the leadership to force congress to grant him the authority that congress asked to grant him in the first place.

Didn’t we already see this play out the last time Congress got Obama to ask them to approve military action in Syria? (To be fair, that strategy did stall time enough for us to achieve our goals of getting Syria to give up their chemical weapons, while avoiding a military conflict that could have made matters worse by empowering ISIL even further. But as long as we’re just discussing the all important prominence of ‘optics’ and abstract leadership…)
