I don’t disagree with you - but I don’t think it’s hopeless either. Aside from the obvious damage Trump is doing to the GOP, this nightmare is changing the Democrats too. You have a tougher, more idealistic (which is good and bad) and more confrontational party - a party ready to deal with the GOP.
The key to moderation, as always, is to systematically destroy the GOP’s electoral viability, leaving moderation as the only viable path forward. I think you’re seeing the start of that process - spurred on by none other than Trump.

Honestly, I’d never heard the term before a couple of days ago.
The racist right came up with the sanitized term “alt-right” as a way to rebrand themselves as mainstream. Trump is using the term “alt-left” as a way to equate the Nazis with the anti-fascists. This fits in well with Trump’s “many sides” are equally to blame rhetoric.
There is no “alt-left” nor is there any “alt-right”.
