Quoted from a friend:

ā€œItā€™s becoming more evident that the majority Trumpā€™s rapidly diminishing base of voters donā€™t love him because they think heā€™s a successful businessman who can ā€œmake America greatā€. Many of them love him simply because heā€™s a vulgar, offensive, illiterate, crude moron who is a loser just like them, thus enabling them to feel better about their own shortcomings and inadequacies. After all, they believe that if an ignorant moron like him can become a billionaire and win the presidency, they believe there is hope for them too. They love him because they believe Trump is just like them. Well, that is, except for their lack of billionaire parents who are prosperous enough to bequeath them with millions of dollars to waste on failed casinos, unprofitable short-lived airlines and scam ā€œuniversitiesā€. Otherwise, yeah, just like them.ā€

Is it possible for this Trump Administration to get any worse? I say, Yes. They can and likely will start a war for their corporate sponsors but at least the middle class will get a $50 tax break.

After reading the generalā€™s remarks, one has the distinct feeling that all of the reporters present ought to have knelt on the floor in front of him. Particularly, given his claim to have been present when Chance Phelps was killed right beside him in in operations in Iraqi Freedom.
Phelps was killed while escorting a convoy outside of Bahgdad. Gee, what was a marine general doing escorting a convoy and how did he miraculously escape being injured?

Oops. Sorry, Generalissimo.

Growing up white in Chicago, you quickly learn that loud black ladies in hats are a kind of Rorschach test. A certain kind of person will just hear whatever the fuck they want to hear whenever one talks, whatever they say.

John Kelly needs to publicly apologize to this black female civilian.

Food fight I had the same thought. And itā€™s about as dignified.

Itā€™s origins are from prohibition I believe. When barrels of booze were dumped they were empty and if you hit them they made a loud noise. However, I think Kelly appropriated it as a pejorative and used it repeatedly against Wilson. While the term may not be racial in origin, his use of it masked a racial animus, in my view. That view seems to be supported after seeing how blatantly Kelly lied about the 2015 event.

Whatever Pres. Trump said it came from Gen. Kelly. End of story. What we have here is deflection politics in play by the libstream media running scared from the Uranium One growing scandal.

Thereā€™s a tape? Thank dog!!!

Kellyā€™s entire talk was about how great the good olā€™ days were whenever everyone (especially Blacks) knew their place.

That was a shocking performance from Kelly yesterday. It scared meā€“I thought he was a sane, sober influence in the WH. But he really showed his true colors, didnā€™t he, with that back-to-the-fifties, vets-as-political-shield rant. You can only hope McMaster and Mattis havenā€™t ingested the kool-aidā€¦

Nope.

It appears in Shaekspeare, and some references to it are in Platoā€™s writings.

Ben Franklin included it in his proverbs.

I watched Taking Chance last night. Itā€™s included in our Amazon Prime subscription. While I do love cheesy, sentimental, patriotic movies where everyone is tender and loving and also dedicated to service (seriously ā€“ Iā€™m a total sucker for the cheese), this was way too far over the top even for me. Itā€™s a military propaganda film pure and simple. Everyone should check it out because it adds a ton of context to Kellyā€™s remarks.

Thanks! I havenā€™t thought about ā€œDeteriorataā€ in a long time - takes me back to listening to Dr Demento on Sunday nights on the Mighty Met KMET 94.7

Of course it also makes me feel very old when I realized that the person adding the images didnā€™t understand many of the references - ā€œRemember the Puebloā€ isnā€™t about the Wild West (but is unfortunately relevant once again :frowning: ) and ā€œbend, fold, spindle and mutilateā€ refers to punch cards.

After the last time he used it, I read in an article somewhere that this is a gun-related saying. The hollowness of the barrel resonates if you tap on it. A bullet in the barrel interrupts that, dampening the sound.

That does not contradict @thunderclapnewman 's reply, btw. The same principle would hold for a whiskey barrel.

I think youā€™re right that it reflects racial animus without being a specifically racist remark or saying.

Not gun related in any way.
Plato had no guns, and he used the phrase.
